About

General

The system of doctoral education in Uzbekistan is in the intermediate stage of transition from the old to the new system. As of 1 January 2013, the previous two-tier system of doctoral education in Uzbekistan has been replaced by the single-stage system of defending the doctoral thesis and being granted the doctor of science degree.

Although significant steps have been made toward the modernization and alignment with the European system, there are still many challenges to be tackled. Furthering the quality of doctoral education at partner HE Institutions in Uzbekistan being the main goal of UZDOC 2.0., the project will strive to address the present challenges by building on the positive results and already achieved goals of the former UZDOC project.

Virtual Doctoral Center

UZDOC 2.0 project responds to the lack of structured cooperation on doctoral education and peer-to-peer learning between Uzbek HEIs and contributes to achieving greater critical mass by establishing a virtual Joint Doctoral Centre, acting as a network of centres for doctoral education at Uzbek partner HEI's. OBJECTIVES

To achieve the overall objective of UZDOC 2.0., four specific project objectives have been set:

  • To improve the capacity of Uzbekistan HEIs for supporting doctoral education, in line with the state-of-the-art EHEA developments in the field
  • To raise the capacity of Uzbekistan HEIs in implementing national standards for quality assurance in doctoral education
  • To increase the capacity of academic and non-academic human resources in Uzbekistan HEIs to contribute toward the implementation of the reforms of doctoral education
  • To improve the collaboration between the academic and business sector and industry in Uzbekistan, reducing the skills gap between doctorate holders and the business sector.

The innovative character of the UZDOC 2.0. project lies in the introduction and implementation of those elements in doctoral education which have so far not been the focus and priority of the Uzbek tertiary education system.

GOALS

Through its activities, the project:

- responds to the lack of structured cooperation on doctoral education and peer-to-peer learning between Uzbek HEIs and contributes to achieving greater critical mass by establishing a virtual Joint Doctoral Centre, acting as a network of centres for doctoral education at Uzbek partner HEIs,

- addresses the issue of fragmented quality assurance system by conducting an exercise in the creation of a model of joint doctoral programme and discussing other forms of collaboration in doctoral education (joint degrees, double degrees, co-tutelles),

- raises awareness on the need of structured support for doctoral education, quality of doctoral education seen as a multi-actor process, the importance of competence development of professionals (both academic and administrative) in the doctoral education sector, and the relevance of transferable skills of doctoral candidates by providing quality assurance seminar and workshop, dedicated knowledge-sharing event, job shadowing activities and training for doctoral supervisors and doctoral candidates,

- contributes to strengthening collaboration between the university doctoral education sector and the business and industry sectors and enhancing career prospects of doctoral graduates in Uzbekistan; this is achieved through the organisation of a roundtable with employers in Uzbekistan to discuss opportunities for university-business partnerships, dedicated Knowledge-sharing event on good practices in collaborative doctoral education in Europe, the creation of Guidelines for career development and planning for doctoral candidates.
